Mouseless – an invisible computer mouse

14th January 2012 Cat: Computer with 25 Comments

Mouseless is an invisible computer mouse. It provides the familiarity of interaction of a physical mouse without actually needing a real hardware mouse. As the computer mouse has remained largely unchanged over the last decades, we have become increasingly proficient at operating the two-button mouse. Recently, various multitouch and gestural interaction technologies have been explored as means to implement alternative methods to interact with a computer. Despite these advances in computing hardware technologies, the two-button computer mouse has remained the predominant means to interact with a computer. The Mouseless invention removes the requirement of having a physical mouse altogether but still provides the intuitive interaction of a physical mouse that we are familiar with. Mouseless consists of an Infrared (IR) laser beam and an Infrared camera. Both IR laser and IR camera are embedded in the computer. The laser beam module is modified with a line cap and placed such that it creates a plane of IR laser just above the surface the computer sits on. The user cups their hand, as if a physical mouse was present underneath, and the laser beam lights up the hand which is in contact with the surface. The IR camera detects those bright IR blobs using computer vision. The change in the position and arrangements of these blobs are interpreted as mouse cursor movement and mouse clicks. As the user moves their hand the cursor on screen moves accordingly. When the user taps

How to connect a TV to computer, HDTV to PC or laptop

20th November 2011 Cat: Computer with No Comments »

Parts used: jasonrj.net I explain the best way to connect your desktop or laptop computer to your HDTV. This will not work with a standard definition TV. I choose the HDMI cable method because it is the absolute best way to do this when concerned with picture quality. I use a DVI to HDMI converter but a video card with a built in HDMI port is even better. Please note that just about any computer is capable of doing this but if the video card is not powerful enough you may see choppy video on the TV as a result. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON EXPENSIVE HDMI CABLES!!!! The cheap cables are EXACTLY as good as the ridiculously expensive ones. This is a proven fact that I find hilarious people try to argue: www.mint.com www.engadget.com gizmodo.com

The Atanasoff-Berry Computer In Operation

17th November 2011 Cat: Computer with 25 Comments

[Recorded: 1999] The Atanasoff-Berry Computer (ABC) occupies a special place in the history of computing in part for its technical accomplishments but also for being at the center of a landmark legal case. It was built by Iowa physics professor John Vincent Atanasoff and graduate student Clifford Berry. Technically, the ABC was an electronic equation solver. It could find solutions to systems of simultaneous linear equations with up to 29 unknowns, a type of problem encountered in Atansasoff’s physics work. Construction of the ABC began in 1938 at Iowa State College (now University) in Ames, Iowa. It was about the size of a large desk, weighed 750 lbs, computed 0.06 operations per second (sustained) and had 0.37 KB of memory. It could also do 30 add/subtract operations per second. While not a computer in the modern sense (since it did not store its own program), it pioneered various techniques in digital computer design including binary arithmetic, parallel processing, and electronic (vacuum tube) switching elements. The device was completed in 1942 and worked, although its spark-gap printer mechanism needed further development. The legal dimension to the ABC story involves a lawsuit between two computer makers, Honeywell and Sperry-Rand. In 1967, Honeywell sued Sperry over their ENIAC patents using the ABC as evidence of prior art. (ENIAC was an early digital electronic calculator completed in 1946). After years of proceedings, on October 19, 1973 the judge in the case

This is my attempt at a Mineral Oil Submersion cooled computer, followed after the project by Puget Custom Computers at www.pugetsystems.com After constantly fighting with loud fans, heat, and dust with my computer, I stumbled upon PCC’s video about submerging a computer in mineral oil. I researched it further and ultimately decided to try it myself. There is no noise at all, even my new computer in an Antec 900 case on lowest settings is unbearably loud after experiencing the lack of noise from this system. The only way to tell if its on is to see if the fans are spinning :) Total stability as the oil equalizes the temperatures from all components. And its completely dust free forever! In the second half of the video I purchased a small 70gph water fountain pump for and a heatercore for a 1973 Ford F250 for about , 1/2″ vinyl tubing and clamps . The praying mantis is real, but it is hungry enough to try to catch and eat the cursor. He had been in the house for four days – prowling for insects around the ceilings. The sound effects accidently supplied by the dog next-door (no – mantises don’t bark). The screen background is by the Bureau of Meterology. The mantis was patient enough that we were able to set up lighting – as long as we kept moving the mouse. (Notice how he keeps one foot on the top of the screen. Earlier he had tried to come down further, but skidded on the surface, and from then was more cautious). No insects, cursors or mice were harmed in the making of this movie. The mantis was returned to the wild. www.rodnmaria.id.au
